This six-week course is open to students of all levels of woodworking experience, from beginners to advanced woodworkers. Students will work on a series of projects, in order to learn the basics of several woodcarving methods, including chip carving, letter carving and designing and carving a Tudor Rose. The skills learned in this class can be applied to sign carving, furniture making, toy making and wood sculpture. The second class will be devoted to the basics of wood carving, project design and a carving demonstration, plus the first student carving exercises.
Students should get their tools before the first class begins and bring these tools to the first class, which will be devoted to the basics of woodworking tool sharpening. Students will learn the steps for achieving the proper cutting edge on woodworking hand tools, such as plane blades, chisels and gouges. Participants are encouraged to bring in their own old or dull tools for evaluation and sharpening, as well as any sharpening stones or related equipment that they wish to learn to use properly. The instructor will bring in his own equipment, for demonstrating purposes and for use in the class.
